Life in America was some what different than life now. People spent there whole lives pursuing there lavish dreams that couldn't become reality for them. Many peoples lives were ruined because of this, because they got caught doing illegal things. People now realize that all of there dreams are not possible. You must go after the dreams that are reasonable for your way of living, but that is not how it was in the early 1900s. Gatsby's dream was to be rich and like the people of his time he did everything he could to try and pursue that dream, even if it meant doing something illegal. The participation of corruption in this story portrays that there was drama in the early 1900s just like there is know. Gatsby became rich by running rum which was illegal at the time. Running rum is equivalent to today's boot legging of drugs. Many people now become rich from drugs ,but in Gatsby's time many people became rich from running rum across the country. Setting
F.Scott Fitzgerald also wrote, The Beautiful and Damned.
The story is based around a young couple, Anthony and Gloria Patch living their lives in New York City during the Jazz Age in the 1920's. As the story opens "It is seven thirty on an August evening. The windows in the living room of the gray house wide open patiently exchanging the tainted inner atmosphere of liquor and smoke for the fresh drowsiness of the late hot dusk. There are dying flower scents upon the air, so thin, so fragile, as to hint already of a summer laid away in time."
"The Beautiful and Damned," provides an excellent portrait of Eastern life during the 1920's and the story of two lovers succumbing to alcoholism. The authors second novel traces the early course of a young marriage and presents it in heroine, Gloria Gilbert, is one of Fitzgeralds most original creations.
As mentioned before this story was wrote during the Jazz Age, a decade of prosperity and riotous living, of bootleggers and gangsters, flappers and hot jazz, flagpole sitters and marathon dancers. "The beautiful and Damned " is undeniably etched into the american psyche of the 1920's. The decade of the 20's was also a decade of deep cultural conflict, conflicts that centered on ethnicity and class.

In Winter Dreams, Dexter dreams and thinks about seasons. “Fall made him clinch his hands and tremble and repeat idiotic sentences to himself, and make brisk abrupt gestures of command to imaginary audiences and armies.”(Winter Dreams page 1) He also dreams about winter quite a bit. The Great Gatsby uses seasons to show changes occurring in the storyline. It was fall when Gatsby died, but in the summer he had his reunion with Daisy.
